In corrispondence to the dynastic crisis occurred after the death of Theodosius the Great (395), Claudian and other Latin panegyrists could find a special terminology to hide an objective and historical fact – the division of the Roman empire into two parts – under the mantle of rhetoric and hypocrisy of euphemisms. In the present paper firstly I examine data and sources up to 550, the year when Corippus wrote his epos Iohannis. Secondly, thanks to the job done by searching engines, I discuss some examples of speaking proper names as Vigilius and Vigilantia and the ways in which late Latin writers play with these words.
