After praising Brillante’s learning and refined implementation of the oral-formulaic theory the paper states two points of criticism: Brillante’s efforts to localize Aegisthus’ abode do not solve the interpretational problems of the Homeric passage, and his reading of the phrase agrou ep’ eschatien does not properly consider its connotations. Instead, the oddities of the passage are seen as traces of the dictation process, and it is sketched how the original audience may have reacted to the narrative.
